Wrapping Exterior Mural & Signage

Project Brief:

For Batson River Brewing & Distilling, HMDC designed and executed a large-scale exterior mural that wrapped around the building's raw brick facade, transforming it into a landmark presence within one of Portland's rapidly evolving neighborhoods. The creative challenge was to create something bold enough to stand out in an emerging urban district while feeling timeless enough to appear as though it had always been part of the landscape. To achieve this, the mural was rendered entirely in black and white, a deliberate choice that allowed the work to age gracefully, maintain strong visibility from a distance, and complement the character of the historic brick architecture.

Drawing inspiration from vintage lithographs and antique outdoor sporting illustrations, the mural introduced imagery rooted in wilderness, exploration, and the natural world. The artwork served as a visual bridge between Batson River's adventurous brand identity and its urban surroundings, bringing a sense of the outdoors into the heart of the city. By combining traditional illustrative techniques with large-scale environmental design, the mural became both a piece of public art and a permanent extension of the brand itself—creating a memorable visual experience that feels classic, authentic, and deeply connected to place.
