Sur Lie
Portland, Maine
Multi-room interior Mural System & Interior Decorating
Project Brief:
For Sur Lie, HMDC was brought in to reimagine an interior that felt dark, dated, and disconnected from the creativity of the food and beverage program. What began as a mural project evolved into a broader environmental redesign, transforming the space from a maroon-colored interior into a vibrant and layered dining experience. The creative direction centered on using abstract geometric forms, patterns, and color relationships to reflect the complexity, balance, and discovery found in both the restaurant's cuisine and carefully curated wine program.
The project included large-scale murals, hand-painted signage, a custom bison painting, bar renovations, and the integration of hanging plants and environmental elements throughout the space. Rather than treating each component as a separate design exercise, every intervention was intended to work together as part of a cohesive atmosphere. The result was a space that felt more energetic, welcoming, and memorable, one that reinforced Sur Lie's identity while creating an environment as thoughtful and expressive as the food being served within it.
